Less than a week ago I wrote about offsite optimization and the importance of anchor text. Evil dot com mogul John Chow demonstrated just how powerful anchor text really is!
John managed to get from nowhere to third place in Google search listing for the phrase ’ make money online ’ in just 4 days. How did he make it? First he included the phrase in the title of his blog and posts. Secondly, he got a lot of links with ‘ make money online ’ as anchor text, and that’s what catapulted him to the first page of Google results!
How did he manage get that many ‘ make money online ’ ancho
red links in just 4 days? He got them through his Review My Blog program, where you get a link back for a review. One of the rules is to link to John’s blog with ‘ make money online ’ as the anchor text. Because John Chow dot Com is a blog with high traffic level, a lot of people linked to him in no time, thus improving his Google listing for the phrase ‘ make money online ’.
John’s resourcefulness in offsite optimization brought him a high ranking in small amount of time. You can also reap the benefits from anchor text, but be patient, it’ll take a bit longer than 4 days if you’re not John Chow. Here are some tips:
Choose the right anchor text
There is no room for mistakes here, and there shouldn’t be any because the process is very simple. You just have to find phrases that are being searched for very often, and you can do that with Overture keyword selector tool. John Chow picked ‘ make money online ’ because that phrase has been searched for almost 45,000 times in the last month, and bare in mind that Overture counts results only for Yahoo! searches. If you get a high position for a phrase no one is searching for, it’ll be of no use to you!
The length of the anchor text
Your anchor text shouldn’t be too short - you don’t have a real chance of getting a high search rank with a single word or 2 word phrases; the competition will swallow you up. Let’s say your anchor text is ‘ make money ‘. According to Overture, that phrase has been searched for 134,000 times in the last month. More searches mean more competition, more competition means less chances of you getting a on top of the list.
Your anchor text shouldn’t be too long – to long anchor text could result in your key phrase being lost in the ‘ noise ‘. Let’s say you want to get high listing for ‘ make money online ‘, but your anchor text is ‘ visit my blog and learn how to make money online for free ‘. Google will have trouble noticing ‘ make money online ‘ in the long anchor text. Longer the anchor text gets, the harder it’ll be to notice the phrase.
Control of the anchor text
Controllable – The anchor text is controllable when all cards are in your hands, meaning that you choose what anchor text will people who link to you use. For example, you agree to a link exchange only if the publisher links to you with the anchor text you desire.
Uncontrollable – This is related to the blog’s title. If you have a blog related to making money online and it’s title is, let’s say, Alex dot Com, you’re in trouble. Why? There is no connection between your niche and your blog’s name. When people link to you in their posts, blog carnivals, lists etc., the anchor text will be ‘ Alex dot Com ‘ and there’s nothing you can do about it. This would be somewhat different if more people knew that relevant anchor text in their links is beneficial to them as well as the people they link to. My advice - if you don’t have a blog yet, do a fair amount of keyword research before you start one.
Non-competitive keywords
If you don’t want to go through weeks or months of optimization for highly searched phrases, you should consider an alternative. You could get high search listing for a less searched phrase. People don’t optimize for those phrases, so that allows you to catch a top search position with little optimization. It won’t be much, but you’ll see an increase in your traffic afterwards.
Combine offsite and onsite
You’ll achieve a far better effect if you make a little tweak to your pages. Basically, all you need to do is to incorporate your phrase in your blog title and posts. Make sure that you ad your phrase to post titles as often as you can, and include it at least twice in every post. But don’t make your blog unreadable!
Now go and get some Google love!

Very helpful article. A few other thoughts are:
* You should vary your anchor text. If all of your anchor text is the same, that's a flag to Google and they may filter your site for that keyword.
* Internal anchor text is important too. Use your navigation structure for this and you can also link within a blog post to another blog post with your anchor text.
* Submitting your site to directories is an easy and helpful way of getting links with anchor text. You can find a good list of directories here:

Good tip with good examples. I would have preferred to see a few more examples that didn't have anything to do with "making money online." Nevertheless, your advice has me going back to an upcoming post on my own blog so I can "fine tune" the title.
This isn't how John Chow did it. For some reason his posts show up differently in the search engines than they should. Top Commenter's on his site saw a huge boost in their Technorati rankings because of how his site is laid out but it did not represent actual linking blogs. Something is up with his site and I don't think it is "ethical web practice" He has been banned from Technorati for whatever he is doing. I would rather have a lower ranking than cheat my way to the top.
I just checked, as of yesterday, March 20th, I guess Technorati unfroze Chow's account.

One more thing. This technique is known as "Google Bombing". They don't look highly upon it and even changed their search algorithim in January 2007 to help prevent this problem. It is basically false advertising to get high rankings.

In theory, if the topics in your blog are potentially popular then there should be no problem finding the correct phrases to use as anchor text. If the content is good and other ethical methods are used for optimization, the blog should naturally take off. In theory! You should not have to resort to 'bombing' or underhand techniques.
