I was scrolling through the comments section of a blog i visit regularly and I felt a sudden need to check out every single commenter's site (there were about 40 of them). I didn't do that because I was bored or had nothing better to do, I did it because I was interested where the author's signature link would lead me. Well, I was surprised to find out that every signature led me to the authors home page! Why do I find this weird? I'll answer that with another question - Why would you link directly to your home page when you can link to a specific page, duh? If you still don't understand what I'm saying, you will once you read the following tips:
1) Link to your Top Post!
I'm sure you like all the posts on your blog, but there must be a post you liked the most, and what's more important - a post your readers loved and linked to! Note that people who click on your link will usually be your first time visitors, so why don't you make a great first impression on them?! By linking to your Top Post, you'll increase your link popularity and get more regular readers to your blog.
2) Link to a Contest page!
Are you running a contest on your blog? If you are, you probably have your own ways of advertising it, but it wouldn't hurt you to include a link to it in your comment signature. You'll surely get more entrants!
3) Link to your Link-Loving Project!
I use this to promote my Technorati Favorites Exchange and Feed My Feed projects. Using this strategy will surely help you increase your link count and visitors.
4) Link to your About page!
This tip is not applicable to everyone. Link to your About page only if it really kicks-ass and by that I mean it's well written, highly descriptive and very personal so you can grab your visitor's attention.
5) Link to your Affiliate page!
If you're a member of an affiliate program, why don't you link to your affiliate page? You may be using banners in your sidebars or under-above-inside posts or whatever, but the best way for you to generate referrals is to send your readers to a page that effectively describes the rewards of joining that particular program. By linking to your affiliate page, you'll increase your referrals and of course - you'll make more money!

You could also apply these strategies to forum signatures..

Very nice post! I have to admit that I usually link to my main page and tend to only use a specific link when the resulting page relates to the post in some fashion.
In an attempt to follow your suggestions, I've linked to my most commented post to date. Any takers?
To all of you who reading this, derek's signature (above) is a real example of what this post was all about!
Wow, I never even thought about it. Of course that is a fantastic idea! Now I just have to pick a post! Thanks for the great advice!
This is smart.
Plus, you can change the anchor text instead of your name, you can put something like "Blogging Revenue" or something.
But some people don't like changing the anchor text.
This is a great idea. I was just reading about this same topic on DigitalPoint, I think. Absolutely worthwhile to link to other popular pages on your site. (BTW - Tried doing it here, but your site limits the size of the link - oh well)
Good advise Alex. Thank you.
I'll start to apply it from now on.
Great tips! Something different from what i've read so far. yea, i think most of us out there make a link back to our main page, me inclusive.

Those are some very creative ideas. I'd like to add that linking to other pages will help your SEO look more natural, and will help search engines crawl more of your pages assuming you are commenting on a "dofollow" blog. I'm using this strategy along with some video marketing on
Adwido, and I am seeing some pretty good traffic returns from both the search engines and video sites.
I love your tips! Thanks for your help while I'm searching for ways to promote my site: Professional Sales Tips
