How Readable Is Your Blog?

73 comments - Post a comment

Few days ago I came across a cool website SEO tool called Website Grader. It calculates your Google PR, Alexa, Technorati Rank, Google Inbound Links, Yahoo Inbound Links, Delicious Saved Count, Google Indexed Pages and gives you a unique score (0-100). It's cool, but there are a lot more similar tools out there.

What caught my attention is a neat statistic that scores your blog's readability level. It's located near the end of the report:

Readability Level : ??? Grade

This score measures the approximate level of education necessary to read and understand the web page content. In most cases, the content should be made to be simple so that a majority of the target audience can understand it.

That's great, but is it reliable? Well, there is no explanation on the grade scoring algorithm so I fetched a few scores for other sites I on similar topics but with different writing styles and compared them with Website Grader scores. Let's see the results:

John Chow - 5th Grade
Shoemoney - 5th Grade
CashQuests - 6th Grade
Blogging Fingers - 6th Grade
DoshDosh - 11th Grade
Copyblogger - High School + 3 Year College
Problogger - High School + 3 Year College
Blogging Secret - Advanced Degree (PhD)

When you look at the blogs that have the same score, you'll notice they are indeed similar. Shoemoney and John Chow both have simple and easily digestible writing stiles (although Shoemoney doesn't give a damn about grammar). The same goes for CashQuests and Blogging Fingers. 5th and 6th Graders probably wouldn't be able to understand the content, but they could surely read it without spelling.

DoshDosh is also clean written but its approach is a bit more professional, business-like. That makes it necessary to have a little bit more education than the blogs mentioned above to read it.

Copyblogger and Problogger are also very similar and often regarded as sister sites. Their writing is quite complex. Higher degree of education is really necessary to read them with ease.

Blogging Secret is seemingly a typical make money blog, but once you start reading it, you'll understand why you need a PhD to comprehend its content. The grammar is simply horrible.

Final Verdict

Judging by the results, it's obvious that the Readability Level scoring is not just popping-up random results, it clearly can interpret how readable a certain site is. I also believe that slight increments in grades don't mean anything. What I mean is that it would be highly unlikely that a 5th grader would easily read through Shoemoney and then go to CashQuests and not be able understand a single word of its content.

I figure there is a span of 3 education levels you need to focus on when judging your blog's readability level.

1. Lower grades - Your blog is simply written and it's easy for readers to understand.
2. High School + College - Your blog's writing is complex and a great deal of your readers will struggle to comprehend it.
3. Advanced Degree (PhD) - Start taking English lessons.

Could this tool be of use to you?

If you want to judge someone else's blog readability level, this tool is worthless. You can be the judge of that.

When it comes to your own blog, it's very likely that you will lack the objectivity and misjudge your blog's readability level. In this case this tool will be helpful indeed!

Are you implying that sites that require a PhD to understand have bad grammar?

Your conclusion is not consistent with your results.

Matt Jones - September 22, 2007 11:26 PM

Interesting comparison. I agree in the ORDER the sites are placed, but that level of education really is not required.

I'm 18 and I haven't taken a 3 year college but I understand all of those sites just fine and I'm sure a lot of people are the same.

The real conclusion is that 6th graders can still read Copybloggger, but they will take less from it and appreciate it less than a graduate.

Nice blog. Welcome to mine: http://fuchsia-fashion.blogspot.com/

Alex - September 23, 2007 9:08 PM

I believe that the tool can correctly estimate a blog's readability level. However, I find the grade scoring method is faulty..

Malignition.com - September 24, 2007 4:41 AM

I didn't have any idea that the Website Grader had this feature. Its time I go get my site checked out.

Paid Survey - September 25, 2007 4:15 PM

I tried mine and came back with a 6th grade reading level which is about what I expected. I think the grader will show a much higher grade level necessary for sites that are written with poor grammar/spelling under the assumption that you would need more knowledge in these areas yourself to decipher what the author is trying to say.

Barry Cox - September 25, 2007 10:00 PM

I've used that tool before on my site, and it came back as having a really high reading level, like college graduate or something like that.

Who would have known my writing was so advanced. Haaa

LOUI$$ - September 26, 2007 5:49 AM

Hi man! I think my English have to improve a lot, but I still manage to make decent of money with my broken english.

Sometime is not depend on grammar, is depend on heart.

I wish all my readers can feel it. :)

Thanks Alex to point me out!

1st off, great website. I've never heard of it and I think it will become a valuable tool for me. 2nd off, I was shocked to have it tell me the site is at a "graduate level". I thought I kept things pretty simple and straight forward. See for yourself and comment what you think. Click Here

Steve - November 3, 2007 1:17 AM

I have to say that a formula that rates grammar really doesn't prove anything about readability. There are several aspects of readability including formatting, and effectiveness of the overall message that the formula can't rate. However, the combined scores from Alexa, Google pr, etc combined with the higher score should give you a list of great sites which you should emulate while creating your blog

Clearly copy blogger should rate very high in this category. I think also there are many books that will teach you how to write great articles and format them for internet reading.

I cover these kinds of topics in my blog. http://u-m-g.blogspot.com.

Nice find on the tools.

Very interesting. But the complexity of the topics themselves has also impact on readability. I believe that entrepreneur's journey is in on the same level as problogger and copyblogger. And so is my own blog b.t.w. (* www.newmediatype.com)

Reading level on the Internet has less to do with intelligence than it has to do with these two factors:

1) The cheaper computers and access services become, the lower the educational level of the Internet user. In 2001 when I wrote the "Email Marketer's Cookbook: Stirring Recipes for Sizzling Campaigns," 90% of Internet users had some college under their hats.

2) The smarter the user on the Internet is, the faster they read, because the busier they are, the more curious they are, and the more they have going on. People with PhD's can understand more if it's written at a 4th grade level, because they're dashing by on a steed of speed.

I love this tip. Thank you so much. I've already forwarded to 10 friends. I also was gratified to see my 50-day old blog already had nearly 800 inbound links! Yay! I'm excited enough to kiss you!

As we know SEO is search engine optimization. This is done to improve ranking in the search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN, Alexa etc. A client looks for the ranking on the first page with relevant keywords from SEO work. The website coming on first page with relevant keywords is easily noticeable by a visitor and thus can fetch ROI. In SEO Content also plays a major role. Virtual Studio Pvt Ltd also provides SEO services. In the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) world, search engine rankings speak for themselves!
